There is a Difference

the tommy is an engineered machine vs the plow is a primitive method
The tommy is engineered through every part and process to install silt fence that won't wash out under the installation, to provide maximum productivity of the machine and labor, and to do so with the least power and most versatility. vs The primitive plow is a simple ripper using a cumbersome process of material dragging 180 degrees around 2 different edges, resulting in a high risk for washout installation, extra labor to load and operate, and poor production rates (relative to the alternative technology).
Soil disrupter technology is designed to create an optimum loose-soil closed trench which restrains fabric in soil prior to compaction (view photos) vs 2" wide plow compacts soil away from fabric, creating an open trench, allowing fabric to float out = haphazard installation and an installation that washes out easily (view photos)
Soil disrupter technology enables 30 H.P compact tractor or larger skid loader to pull the machine = more maneuverability and versability on construction sites = lower costs vs Primitve method requires a 50 H.P. farm tractor to pull 18 inches deep, or a skid loader to struggle pulling it, if at all = less maneuverability and less versatility = higher costs
Moving pivot technology enables consistent, dependable installation in all terrain conditions (view photos) vs Primitive method operates primarily in straight runs, flat terrain
Moving pivot technology enables one man operation - loading and fabric installation with no waste of material (view photos) vs Primitive method requires 2 men to load, double the time to thread the fabric into the machine, and 2 men to install (one man must hold the fabric to start the installation) (view photos)
Moving pivot technology enables plastic to do the work of placing the fabric in the slice, and at the same time protect the machine from costly damage in a backing accident by bending or breaking (view photos) vs Material plates would be easily damaged in a backing accident and require very costly repairs (view photos)
EPA Verified Performance, ASTM Specification (click to ASTM page) vs Unproven, experimental method
9 years proven durability and experience; technology developed by a sediment control expert and industry leader vs 1 year of marketing claims; method developed for rodent control 50 years ago and promoted now by an equipment dealer
One man easily loads 2600 ft. rolls at waist high off of a truck bed vs 2 men required to load overhead
2600 ft. roll capacity = fewer reloads = more productivity vs Overhead loading makes larger rolls (> 1000 ft) prohibitive to use and requires an extra man
